There’s not a person on earth who doesn’t love holidays. In addition to days off from work and school it is a time filled with festivity, warmth and holiday spirit. With the approach of December, the magic bells begin to ring and there is a dash of red in every street.
What if Santa came and told you 9 Secrets…secrets and truth about the future? Something you could do today to make tomorrow amazing! That would be wonderful … right?
Holidays come with the spirit of giving and even though there are a few days between now and the actual holidays, our friends have started stocking up and purchasing gifts for their loved ones. What if Santa told you “Invest in your child’s future, invest in the RIGHT activities that will surely make your child shine!”
Here are some amazing secrets that Santa wished you knew: SECRET’S ABOUT STEM EDUCATION- The education for the future.
Here are 9 reasons why children need STEM education:
Prepares for the Future:
STEM allows children to get ready and qualified for high paying super cool jobs that are on the rise! Our children are taught 21st century skills such as innovation, collaboration, communication, and technology integration. The best jobs in the future would be in Science, Technology, Engineering and Medical. There are already incredible breakthroughs in the respective fields and will definitely be more with time as your children get into it.
You would want to inspire your little ones to become confident leaders. STEM is motivational and kids get to learn from their role models. If introduced at an early age, it allows them to imbibe leadership skills. The earlier they start, the sooner they will learn them and will have more time to polish the skills. With more and more advancements in STEM, global leadership is changing and as our children grow up, they can lead us in the fields.
Kid’s Favorite Way of Learning:
The best thing about STEM is the way it is taught to the students and children. Kids conduct experiments, build structures, and flex their curiosity and questioning muscles. Programs are not only uniquely designed to meet the intellectual needs of the respective ages of the students, but are also thoroughly studied to ensure that the children genuinely enjoy the learning process. And the more the student enjoys, the more they learn.
STEM allows children to explore and learn more about the world. Ranging from video game creation to deep-sea exploration to medicine to the vast field of engineering. STEM has helped us in real life and they can understand how it can help the human race in the long run.
Holidays are great fun for the kids and after working hard during the year. They need some break to relax and unwind and play in the snow. But you can only play so much before you start getting bored. STEM classes should do the trick and since its fun to do, they don’t need to worry about things getting boring or studying again.
Socializing like Santa:
With STEM education, they will get to interact and socialize with like-minded children and let their curiosity flow. They will learn teamwork and team play and that will be beneficial in growing friendships and buddies.
Perhaps the most important skill the children can learn is problem solving. They will be presented with multiple challenges in their STEM related coursework. They will then cultivate skills of problem solving to overcome these obstacles and come out at the other end successful. Even if they do not end up working in a STEM related field, problem solving a skill that will help them no matter which field they are in professionally.
As information begins to get incredibly easy to get, so does the risk of false information being circulated also increases. It is imperative for a person to cultivate a sense of judgment that can help them identify these false claims and uncover the real truth. Critical thinking is the objective analysis of facts to form an unbiased, rational, and skeptical judgment. It is also a very useful tool in STEM and something the previous skill relies on. STEM follows an organized process that leads to strong beliefs. Critical thinking teaches us to be analytic and ask questions. And, through these questions, we can form sound judgments that lead to innovative solutions.
Guarantees a successful future:
From the knowledge they gain from the STEM education, they will have what the real world needs. However, most of the children who are enrolled in the STEM program study further in the field and make careers in these fields. Science and Tech along with Engineering and Medical fields have always been the most innovative fields. Notwithstanding, there is always something new happening each day and there is always need of more qualified personnel to work in these fields. With STEM education, their future is secure as there will always be need of them in the present and the future. Even if the job doesn’t exist, in a few years when the child graduates, there will be a huge demand in that relevant job.
Grade 1-5 kids are eager learners. They are highly curious and active. However, their playfulness may affect their learning abilities, if it is not directed in the right way. Teachers and parents have the mandate to guide the learning of these little ones and ensure they grasp concepts as easily as possible. This is especially the case with the science, technical, engineering, art, and mathematics activities, as they are quite challenging. Triggering the thinking capacity of the students through STEM and STEAM activities encourages them to explore ideas, experiment and learning the process. Here is a list of 15 activities that you can engage your grade 1-5 kid at school or at home.
Sugar Density Rainbow
This physical science activity is easy to prepare at home or at school. You will need water, food, colour, glass jars, measuring jars, teaspoon, and sugar. For instance, he or she will measure a cup of water and pour this into each of the jars to acquire an equal amount of water. He will also measure out the food colour and place different colours into the glass jars to obtain the colours of the rainbow. The kids will then experiment with the different liquids to create varying densities by starting with zero spoons of sugar and adding one spoonful to each consecutive liquid. After dissolving the sugar, the kids will make a tower using the glass jars and observe the differences in the density through the varying abilities to sink. http://coolscienceexperimentshq.com/
Kids may struggle with getting the concepts in their geometry class. However, making the activity playful will enhance their learning by triggering their creativity and imagination. Playing around with the geometric shapes may even trigger their art and design interest, making the activity more worthwhile. You will need foam sheets, blocks of various shapes, scissors, and straws.
Children in the 1-5th grades have already appreciated the role of nature in science. It would be worthwhile to introduce them to the concepts of germination and the conditions required by a seed to turn into a seedling through their garden. Have them grow a seed of their choice, cultivate and monitor it until it sprouts and turns into a seedling. The satisfaction they will get out of the nurture, combined with the learning taking place, makes this a must try STEM activity.
This engineering activity is perfect for kids in the 1 – 5th-grades. You may use the opportunity to share about the advantages of natural food through the nutritional value of the juice they prepared. Disclaimer: They may not like the taste, even if they made it!
Teach the kids this complex idea through a playful experiment. The idea is to recreate the solar systems they know, as well as the famous Milky Way. They can create this craftily, using stars of different colours and drawing lines to connect the joints and make the expected feature. A black background will help reproduce the real scenario.
Decimals can be fun to learn if you do it using visuals. The kids will appreciate the place value of figures they create, rather than those already printed in the textbooks. They will alter transfer this knowledge to their class work. Moreover, using the money to explain decimals can be a realistic venture since children can remember the logic behind the change they received at the store, more easily.
A great way to learn about fractions is to use shapes such as circles, rectangles, and squares. Besides appreciating the different shapes, the kids can create different fractions and colour them differently. For instance, a circle will be cut into two to form two halves. The halves, cut into two, will for two quarters.
The kids can learn this concept easily in their classroom or at home. You will need an aquarium that allows you to plant seeds at the top. This way, children will monitor the progress of the seeds as they turn into seedlings and eventually plants. This will help them appreciate and recall the idea of hydroponics.
This physics concept can be learnt from the comfort of the home, or outdoors. Kids will realize that they can carry heavy stuff easily if they create an artificial pulley system. This may involve tying a rope to the handle of a bucket full of sand, and then lifting it by sliding the rope across the doorknob.
Another concept that helps the kids appreciate scientific ideologies is the use of drawings. The children can make drawings of machines they can recall or see, trying to imitate its real parameters as closely as possible. This may also help them appreciate art and design. http://artfulparent.com/jean-vant-hul-writer-childrens-art-enabler
